From Taxes to Las Vegas

1. The US Congress moved the deadline for taxes from March 15 to April 15, in 1954.

2. The Tweed Jacket owes its name to the river Tweed. Originally called “tweel” (or twill in our modern parlance), the coarse, heavily textured fabric was mostly produced in a region of Scotland bordering the River Tweed.

3. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and his wife Queen Elizabeth II share the same great-great-grandmother — Queen Victoria — making them third cousins. He used to be the Prince of Greece and Denmark, when his original name was Philippos Andreou Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. He changed his name to Philip Mountbatten upon becoming a naturalized British subject and used the anglicized version of his mother’s surname – Battenberg – Mountbatten.

4. The Las Vegas Strip is probably the most famous thing about Nevada and the top reason tourists come to Las Vegas. But the Strip isn’t in Las Vegas - it’s actually in the unincorporated city of Paradise. Many of the major casinos in the 1950s were built just outside of Las Vegas in county territory — in part to avoid municipal taxes and fees.
